Summer Term 2026

Week beginning 1.6.26-Letters and Sounds-AM NURSERY

This week the children have been introduced to reading simple 2 & 3 letter/sound words using s, a, t, p, i, n. They are using their sound knowledge to break down the sounds from left to right and then to blend them together to say the word. This can be practised at home using individual sound cards (see attachment below), or by simply writing the letters on a board or piece of paper.

We are also continuing to revise all letters and sounds learnt so far from A to Z. Please can you have a go at home, using the attachments below.

We have also been playing ORAL blending games and it would be very beneficial if you could practice these at home, when you are out and about, or even on car journeys.

Stick to words with 3 letters/sounds, and use words that rhyme.

Examples:

I say cat. Can you tell me the sounds?

I say bat. Can you tell me the sounds?

I say mat. Can you tell me the sounds?

Then try the reverse:

You say the sounds and your child then has to guess the word.

REMEMBER-Model if your child is struggling and get them to repeat/join in with you.

As part of daily story time, ask your child to choose a book and then select any page with text. Show them the letter/sound card of the week and then work with them to count how many you can see on the page. When you have located the letters/sounds, encourage your child to point to them and say the sound they make.

Please click on the link below to find individual letter/sound cards to use with your child. Remember, you say the letter name and then support your child to say the sound. Eg. "This is the letter m and it makes the sound mmmmm."

Please click on the link below to access an interactive alphabet chant, to help your child learn the alphabet. Please click on the link in the letter to start the chant.

Week beginning 1.6.26

This week the children in morning Nursery have been working hard on movement associated with writing letters. They have loved using "grown up" paint brushes on the large painting board. They have been practising up/down, side to side, around the circle and the wave. These movements are essential and are to be carried out on a "big" scale in order to facilitate the writing of letters on a smaller scale. We call this Squiggle and the author of Squiggle is Shonette Bason-Wood.

Week beginning 18.5.26

This week the children in Dragonflies Nursery have been celebrating this year's Urdd Plege, which is peace, as well as celebrating Cultural Diversity Day on Thursday. We began the week with a story, All are Welcome, and remembering our No Outsiders message-"All different, all welcome!" On Thursday the children enjoyed looking at the world map and finding the different countires where members of their family live. We then learnt to say, "Hello" using the different languages of our class, and remembered the different ways by transforming our welcome song.

Article 30 UNCRC:

"Children have the right to celebrate their own culture and use their home language."

Week beginning 11.5.26

This week the children in afternoon Nursery have been enjoying working collaboratively in their play and developing their understanding of turn taking, as well as gaining enjoyment from playing with others.

Week beginning 4.5.26

Once again this week the children in both morning and afternoon Nursery classes have been enjoying the fine weather and developing their integral skills in mud kitchen-Creativity and innovation, planning and organising, problem-solving and personal effectiveness. The children in afternoon Nursery have also been working alongside the children in Reception to develop these skills whilst being in the mud kitchen.

Week beginning 20.4.26

This week the children in AM and PM Nursery have celebrated Earth Day throughout the week by enjoying being in nature whilst playing in mud kitchen. Whilst playing they have been learning to be ethical dragons, through finding out how to care for nature. They have also been extremely creative dragons, through using their imagination to create lots of things using the materials that have been given to them. We have also reminded them that anytime they are outdoors in nature, exercising and working together, they are also being healthy dragons. They have made ALL SORTS of potions, cakes, drinks, pies, soups................Absolute joy!!!

Week beginning 13.4.26

This week the children in AM Nursery have been introduced to their new topic. It is an enterprise project called Market Stall and.....the children will be resourcing and running their very own market stall in Swansea City Centre in June, along with many other schools from across the city. Very exciting!!! A group of children from Reception came to share their story from last year as an introduction. I will send you more information over the next few weeks.

The children have also enjoyed making pizzas in mud kitchen and practising saying "Wyt ti'n hoffi....?" (Do you like....?)
