Welcome to the Year 6 Noticeboard

What have we been learning in class this week?

Wk beginning 23.2.26

February has been another action-packed month in Year 6, filled with rich learning experiences and creative opportunities. The children have continued to impress us with their enthusiasm, teamwork, and growing independence as we move through the spring term.

One of the highlights of the month was a visit from local artist Nina Morgan. The pupils explored a range of artistic techniques, including drawing, collage and screen printing. Nina helped transform the collaborative designs into vibrant, professional-quality screen prints. The pupils worked collaboratively to produce a stunning collection of artwork, and we are incredibly proud of what they achieved. These beautiful pieces will be on sale later this term, with funds contributing to future creative projects and Year 6 activities.

We were also delighted to welcome Welsh beatboxer and rap artist Mr Phormula. His workshop was an incredible, high-energy session in which the children learned how rhythm works, how to build a beat using only their voice, and how to structure rap lyrics. The most impressive moment was watching him take the children’s ideas and turn them into a short track blending both Welsh and English. The pupils were absolutely captivated and left the session feeling inspired to create more music of their own.

Continuing the musical theme, Year 6 visited Swansea Arena to watch a variety of performers in a celebration of Black culture in Swansea. It was a loud, fun-filled event and a wonderful opportunity for the children to experience a range of live music and energetic performances. They represented the school brilliantly throughout the entire trip.

Alongside these exciting experiences, we have continued to enjoy our dance lessons with Julie Hobday. The children have worked hard to create partner motifs to include in a performance, showing both creativity and teamwork.

Back in the classroom, the pupils have published their Welsh journey poems, drawing on their knowledge of Welsh myths and legends. It was wonderful to see so many children confidently incorporating Welsh vocabulary into their writing. In Maths, the children have been investigating fractions and have now moved on to exploring area and perimeter. The Yorkshire building society visited year 6 to discuss financial management. We learnt about needs and wants, and the importance of setting a budget – an important life skill.

In ICT, Year 6 have become experts in creating spreadsheets; a skill that will be particularly useful as we begin planning our enterprise project. For Safer internet day year 6 participated in a live lesson and online quiz about the advantages and disadvantages of using AI. Technocamps also delivered a fascinating workshop on the role of semi-conductors in modern technology – the children loved making their quiz boards and programming the microbits.

We have also continued reading and enjoying our class novel Holes. It has sparked great discussion within the classroom and may have even inspired a few costume ideas for next month’s World Book Day celebrations.

Finally, thank you to everyone who was able to visit our classroom to share their child’s work. It was lovely to listen to so many pupils talk about their achievements with such pride.

Reading

Year 6 children are expected to read daily at home and log their reading journal at least three times a week. We kindly ask that parents/guardians sign the reading journal once a week to help us monitor their progress. Each child has a designated reading day. Please see the inside of your child's reading journal to see which day your child's journal is due. Please see the below infographic on why reading every day is so important. If you need any advice on how to support the development of reading or book recommendations that are appropriate for your child.

If your child is part of the 'Nessy' or 'Reading Eggs' group, both of these platforms are able to be accessed at home for further practice.

Maths, Spelling and Grammar

All maths, times tables, spelling and grammar homework will be set via SumDog. Homework will be linked to the topics we have covered in school and help us to identify any misconceptions.

Other Homework

Occasionally, we will set other, optional homework for Year 6 children to complete.  Please keep an eye on ClassDojo for more information on this.
