Parent Workshop - Restrictive Eating, Autism & the School Environment - June 2nd 10am-12pm
Parent Workshop - Restrictive Eating, Autism & the School Environment - June 2nd 10am-12pm
Many children and young people, particularly autistic pupils, experience restrictive eating linked to anxiety, sensory differences and a need for predictability. This can significantly impact their experience of school.
This session explores how school environments and routines can either reduce or increase distress around eating, and how small, practical adjustments can make a meaningful difference.
The session will cover:
- What restrictive eating can look like, including profiles sometimes diagnosed as ARFID
- Links between autism, sensory processing differences and eating
- How school environments and lunchtime practices can affect eating and anxiety
- Practical, realistic adjustments schools can make to support pupils
- Common well‑intentioned strategies that can unintentionally increase distress
- Working collaboratively with families to support a positive relationship with food
You’ll gain a clearer understanding of restrictive eating (including ARFID), its links to autism, and realistic, compassionate strategies to support pupils. We’ll also explore approaches that may unintentionally increase distress and how to work positively with families.
Suitable for parents, carers, school staff and ALN professionals, this session promotes inclusive, neurodivergence-affirming support that prioritises wellbeing, dignity and emotional safety.
