  • Dylan Day '22!

Thu 31 Mar 2022 Mr Crofts

    Dear Parents,

As part of this year’s International Dylan Thomas Day, which is celebrated on 14 May each year, DylanED invites school children aged 8-11 to take part in a very special competition.

The competition, which is entitled ‘My Imaginary Place,’ is based around extracts from Dylan Thomas' beloved stories.

Following in the footsteps of Swansea’s foremost writer and storyteller, the competition looks for school children aged 8-11 to submit a short story (100 words), poem or picture of their own imaginary place.

The overall winner will receive a goody bag. Selected entries will feature in an online exhibition in celebration of 'Dylan Day.'

Please follow the link below to download the file to complete your entry.

Please can entries be sent to CroftsJ11@hwbcymru.net by Wednesday 27th April with the title 'My imaginary place'.  Please note: All entries must be submitted via the child's teacher / school.

    Pob lwc!

    Queens Jubilee Celebrations

    Creating the Queens Green Canopy

As part of the celebrations for our Queens Jubilee, we are joining the “Queens Green Canopy”.

Our school has been given a tree for every child to plant. As part of the celebration and school tentatively returning to normal activities, we would like to invite you into school next week to plant a tree with your child. Each class will be allocated a time slot, please let class teachers know if a parent is going to attend, and arrive at the beginning of the timeslot to help with organisation of the week. If you are able, please bring a spade and trowel with you.

To ensure this event is successful and Covid safe we ask:

Please only attend if you are Covid symptom free.

Only plant a tree with your child.

Attend school during your child’s class time slot.

Please look out for the timetable via classdojo and the school website.

It will be lovely to see parents/carers back on school premises!

  • Beautiful Jubilee products from your child's artwork.

Thu 24 Mar 2022 Carly Jackson

2022 will be a year that goes down in British history - The Platinum Jubilee!
The UK’s longest reigning monarch will be celebrated across the land.
In honour of this historical event, we are running a special event, where children can get creative with their artwork to celebrate this memorable occasion...and for our school to have the extra opportunity to fundraise at the same time!

This will run in the same way as the personalised Christmas Cards the children have done previously at Christmas time.

Children will do their art work on the paper provided.

  • Dignitaries Visit to Sketty Primary School

Fri 18 Mar 2022 School Council and Rights Respecting School Ambassadors

Last Thursday, 10th March 2022, the Lord Lieutenant, High Sheriff of West Glamorgan and the Lord Mayor of Swansea visited Sketty Primary school to plant a tree for the Queen's Canopy as part of the Queen's Jubilee and to celebrate Swansea being a Queen's Canopy "Champion city".

Our special visitors were given a tour of the school by Head teacher Mrs Bev Phillips; Vice Chair of Governors, Mr Paul Mort; one of our school Governors Mrs Emma Laycock; and Chair of the PTA Mr Tom Basset. Also present were Sketty Primary School Councillors and Rights Respecting School Ambassadors.

The dignitaries met all the pupils and staff at Sketty Primary School. The Lord Lieutenant, High Sheriff and Lord Mayor are all women, so it was fantastic for them to visit on the week of International Women's Day 2022.

After our special visitors had planted the tree for the Queen's Jubilee, we moved to the official opening of our new adventure play area which our PTA have kindly raised money for. We all did a countdown and the Lord Lieutenant cut the ribbon and opened the area. We are looking forward to spending lots of time there, playing with our friends, so many thanks to our PTA on behalf of all the children and the staff, we are so grateful for all your fundraising work.

Then, the Lord Lieutenant officially opened our Well-being Shed. Rights Respecting Ambassadors and School Councillors talked to the dignitaries about the work they have been doing to support children's health and well-being in Sketty Primary School. This work includes pupils' ideas for the new Curriculum of Wales; a well-being 'Special Mission' with Sally Holland, The Children's Commissioner of Wales and UNICEF's Outright campaign to support Mental Health. Our special visitors loved the well-being shed and congratulated School Council and Rights Respecting School Ambassadors on all their hard work to help support pupils with their well-being and mental health.

Afterwards, the dignitaries met Sketty Primary Sports Ambassadors who explained their role of supporting sport across the school and teaching Physical Education lessons to fellow pupils, through the medium of welsh.

Finally, the Lord Lieutenant, the High Sheriff and the Lord Mayor were presented with gifts from our School Councillors and Rights Respecting Schools Ambassadors.

Savannah, Faye and Bethan presented each of the dignitaries with a beautiful bouquet of flowers. Savannah explained the sentiment behind the flowers in the bouquet, sunflowers to support Ukraine as they are the Ukrainian national flower and daffodils to represent Wales. Our special visitors thanked us and said that the flowers were lovely. Freya, Macie and Isabelle presented a pack of greeting cards that our pupils had made. Freya told the dignitaries our pupils had used silk printing to make them. The Lord Lieutenant, the High Sheriff and the Lord Mayor said that the cards were beautiful and very detailed.

The dignitaries, thanked us for the gifts and said that they had thoroughly enjoyed their visit to our school meeting pupils, staff, governors and parents. They said they were very impressed and hoped to be able to visit our again in the near future.

Later that day, School Council and Rights Respecting School Ambassadors officially opened our new outdoor reading area, again funded by our wonderful PTA. Thank you all! Pupils and staff are looking forward to using it reading outdoors.

It was a great day at Sketty Primary School and one we will remember for a long time to come.

  • Update from Mrs Phillips

Fri 18 Mar 2022 Bev Phillips

Spring has definitely sprung in Sketty Primary.

A big thank you to everyone who contributed to our Swansea Schools Stand Up for Ukraine sunflower planting fundraiser. We raised £362 which, when added to the whole schools total, looks set to total over £22,000! A super effort from everyone, to help and support an awful situation.

March is always a busy time in school. It begins on St David's day which has now developed into a fantastic fortnight of activities finishing today with the Chairing of the Bard. Please watch the website for the name of the crowned winner.

It’s our day to celebrate World Book Day! As I look out of my office, I can see lots of Hogwarts pupils who have turned up for the day. Mary Poppins and Alice in Wonderland are here too. Alongside the Little Mermaid and Willy Wonka, lots of different characters from the children's favourite books are having a wonderful day!! I believe I’ve seen some characters from Encanto… but we don’t talk about Bruno do we?? And I’m still looking for Where’s Wally?!

Just when we couldn’t be any busier it’s Comic Relief – Red nose day too!! With all this fun going on we ask, "Can the children be learning anything?" Rest assured a huge amount of learning takes place through our awareness days! Please see our website and follow us on twitter to see just some of the activities the children are taking part in.

A big thankyou to all families who took part in our community window trail based on your favourite books as part of our World Book Day celebration. A super effort was made by everyone, well done indeed! Thanks to Mr Crofts for organising!

Just when you think you can close the lid on the dressing up box, we have a few more events happening next week.

Monday is a very important day as it is the awareness day for Down's Syndrome and Cerebral Palsy.

To show awareness and support for Down's Syndrome, we wear odd socks and it's wear green to show awareness and support of Cerebral Palsy. It's up to you entirely if you want to join in!!

And finally, I do not have a Covid update at the moment, so we'll carry on as we are, probably up to Easter. As soon as I have any information I will pass it on to you.

Thanks to all staff for making our events such a success and thank you to all parents/carers for your continued support. A big well done to our fabulous children, it almost feels like normal school life has returned.
