  • Keep Children Safe Online This Summer

Wed 27 Jul 2022 Carly Jackson

The advent of the school holidays may temporarily release parents from daily considerations like “Have they done all their homework?” and “Where did I last see that backpack?” … but it often replaces those concerns with substitute stresses such as “Is he honestly going to play on that video game all day – again?” and “Who’s she been chatting to online all afternoon?”

Many young people’s knee-jerk solution for entertaining themselves this summer will be to reach for an internet-enabled device. There’s nothing intrinsically wrong with that – but it does put pressure on parents in terms of online safeguarding. The National Online Safety #WakeUpWednesday guide has some useful tips that trusted adults might like to remind themselves of as the school holidays begin.

Article 2: Rights apply to everyone; whatever their race religion or abilities, whatever they think or say, whatever type of family they come from.

    The World Reimagined

This term our Y5 pupils have been taking part in a national educational art project called ‘The World Reimagined’, featuring globally recognised artists, to transform how we understand the transatlantic slave trade and it’s impact on us all.

The Learning Programme has supported pupils to build the mind sets, attitudes and skills needed to understand racial justice and empower them to overcome divisions, be compassionate and take actions that make racial justice a reality in our society.

The theme of the project has been ‘Mother Africa’ - a celebration of the cultural richness and diversity of Africa. Pupils have learned about African culture, Adinkra symbols and the Wind rush Generation, with focus on compassion, curiosity, courage, connection and critical thinking. They have discussed what belonging means to them and how this links to their children's rights.

As an end result to the project, pupils have created their own Globe filled with handprints, adinkra symbols and messages of belonging, that will feature in the local community as part of The World Reimagined sculpture trails between August and October 2022 (including profiles on The World Reimagined digital platforms) and then returned to the school as a legacy.

Sketty Primary's globe will be on exhibition in The Glynn Vivian Art Gallery.
