    Fundraising for Otis

On Thursday 1st February, we are planning to hold a fundraising and dress up day to raise money for Otis our Reading Dog.

We are lucky enough to have been working alongside Liz Jackson and Otis for the last few years and many children have had the experience of reading with Otis.

Liz works for the John Burns Foundation, which is a charity, their aim is to make a difference to the lives of people and companion animals across the UK.

The ‘Burns at your side’ project is aimed at children of all ages to help with reading and communication skills. Reading to our trained learning support dogs has proven to have a huge impact on the children that participate.

The fear and pressure they may feel when reading to an adult is taken away and their stress level is reduced. The reading dogs scheme provides a calm, relaxing safe environment where a child can enjoy a book without any judgement, they can develop their vocabulary and improve their reading skills.

On Thursday 1st February, we would like the children to wear something blue (or something doggy) and make a voluntary contribution of £1. All the money raised will go to the Burns Foundation. We do not want you to go out and buy anything, so if they do not have anything already, they can wear their school jumpers. The funds raised will be used to cover the increased costs incurred with regards to training the volunteer teams, uniform, insurance etc.

    Many thanks

Tickets can be booked on our Eventbrite page here.

We would be hugely grateful if you could share this information widely amongst any professionals, parents, carers and families.  We have been commissioned and funded by Welsh Government ALN Team to deliver these events across Wales between now and March 2024 - and we aim to support schools, colleges and LA’s by sharing localised information about ALN implementation in a way that is supportive and informative, impartial, and independent.

We have run our From SEN To ALN collection of events previously and they have been extremely well attended and the feedback from parents and carers has been extremely positive in that they have a far better understanding of ALN implementation and the new code. It has also provided an opportunity for us to support parents and carers to contact schools and/or colleges with any comments or concerns in the first instance.

Are you a parent or carer wanting to know more about the new Additional Learning Needs (ALN) system in Wales?

    •          Would you like an opportunity to take your views and experiences of the new ALN system, directly to the Welsh Government?

    •          Would you like to meet and talk about your experiences of education with other parents and carers of children/young people with ALN

                and disabilities?

    What this session will cover

    •          How do I know if my child or young person has ALN?

    •          From SEN to ALN – what changes are happening?

    •          What does the law say?

    •          What are my rights?

    •          How can I challenge decisions or appeal?

    •          What does the Education Tribunal for Wales do?

    •          Where can I get free, accurate and impartial information?

    •          Fact checker – bring your experiences of the new ALN system, we will provide information and understanding.

    •          Meet other parents and carers and share your stories

    •          Access FREE, impartial information from the SNAP Cymru team and meet your local SNAP Cymru caseworkers

    •          Information and comments gathered from these sessions, will be taken directly back to the Welsh Government ALN team and shared

                anonymously
