  • Does your child suffer with sleep issues?

Tue 31 Jan 2023 Julie Miller

At any given time up to 40% of adults and 50% of children (this rises to 80% with an ALN diagnosis) have difficulties with their sleep. Yet in a recent survey, almost 60% of adults felt there was a lack of support for sleep issues. Sleep problems can leave people feeling isolated and lonely.

Our free helpline is run by trained sleep advisors, many of whom are specialists in working with ALN. We can talk to young people directly, or parents (we can also talk to adults, including older people, about their sleep issues).

The helpline is open 5 times a week, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday evenings 7-9pm, and Wednesday mornings 9-11am. The number is 03303 530 541.

You can read more here: https://thesleepcharity.org.uk/national-sleep-helpline/

We are sending information about this wonderful free resource that can help parents and children to learn more about their sleep and develop better bedtime routines. Sleep is essential to brain function, by helping children to sleep better, we can help them to succeed in school.

In response to caller feedback, we have recently changed our opening hours to include a morning session. I have attached a poster with the new opening times and more information about the service

  • Visit from Children's Commissioner of Wales, Rocio Cifuentes 27.1.23

Mon 30 Jan 2023 RRS Ambassadors

Article 3 - The best interests of the child must be a top priority in all things that affect children.

Article 12 - Every child has the right to a say in all matters affecting them, and to have their views taken seriously.

Article 13 - Every child must be free to say what they think.

    Article 29 - Education must encourage a child's respect for children's rights

We were all very excited to meet  Rocio Cifuentes, The Children's Commissioner of Wales. The first thing we did was take Rocio on a tour of the school, so that she could visit all the classes and speak to pupils and staff about their work with children's rights.

Then, Rocio spoke to some children about their well-being and the resilience activities they do with Miss Lewis in the well-being shed to support their mental health and emotional well-being.

Afterwards, Rights Respecting School Ambassadors talked to her about our special missions for the Children's Commissioner of Wales and our Outright campaign with UNICEF about Health care and well-being in our school.

Rocio then spoke to School Council about their work with children's rights and the Anti-Bullying Policy they are developing with pupils.

Rocio was very impressed with the work that we do in Sketty Primary to ensure that all children have their rights.

Well done to this week's certificate winners

  • Important information

    Tue 24 Jan 2023

    Tuesday 24th January 2023

    Dear Parents/Carers,

You will be aware that school leaders’ union NAHT Cymru will now engage in industrial action short of strike and NEU is currently taking discontinuous strike action. Whilst the unions have collectively tried to minimise the direct impact on children and young people, the ability of our school to maintain all of our usual provisions has been affected.

As a result of strike action being taken by the National Education Union (NEU) on 1st February 2023, and following discussions with the Chair of Governors, the impact on our school will be as follows:

Closed to pupils but open to non-striking staff.

Further industrial action is planned on 14th February, 15th March and 16th March. We will write to you again a week before these dates with a further update.

The teaching staff and I want to see an end to this period of dispute and a return to normal school life as soon as possible.

    Yours faithfully,

    Mrs Bev Phillips

  • IMPORTANT MESSAGE

    Wed 18 Jan 2023 M Jones

    Dear Parents/Carers,

We have had a very exciting afternoon in Sketty Primary. Our fire alarm activated, and we left the building in record time.

I HAVE TO SAY THE CHILDREN AND STAFF WERE AMAZING.

As we were unable to detect any fires as indicated by the fire panel. I decided to call the Fire Brigade to check. They arrived in record time and checked the building thoroughly.

The Chief Fire Fighter said that the building was safe, and we all returned to our classrooms.

The activation has been reported to the Local Authority as it is thought there is a fault in the system.

A big Thank You to the Fire Service for their speedy response and thorough check of our building.

And “Well Done” to all our children and staff who were, as they always are, fantastic.

  • Camhs Schools In Reach Parent Workshop

    Thu 12 Jan 2023

    Reminder

    School In-reach Parent Workshops

In conjunction with CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service), we will be running a series of parent workshops, this term exploring different issues and how the service can support our learners in and out of school.

The first workshop is set for January 17th at 5.30pm in school. The session will focus on 'Mental Health vs Emotional Well-being'

The workshop will briefly outline the School In-reach service aims, including challenging the medicalisation of well-being needs in children. We then explore the distinction between mental health and emotional well-being and discuss how to foster a measured and proportionate response to concerns.

We look forward to seeing you then.
    Many thanks
